Aloha Library Book Club

Our next book club selection is Harlem Shuffle by Colson Whitehead! It’s a warmhearted crime saga that takes place in Harlem from 1959-1964 and portrays the humanity and humor of small-time hustlers. In the novelist Denny S. Bryce’s review of the book for NPR she wrote, it “is also a powerful tale of a man’s love for his family… and the man at the center is a devastatingly enjoyable character who has a true gift for words…”
Reserve it from our catalog here.  Available in multiple formats including: large print, eBook, audiobook CD, downloadable audiobook, and preloaded audiobook (Playaway).

Kids Take & Make: Amate Paintings

In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month,  September’s take and make will explore the traditional Mexican folk art known as amate bark paintings.  Amate (pronounced “ah-MAH-tay”) bark painting is an ancient tradition that uses paper made from tree bark to create bright, vibrant paintings featuring scenes of daily life, history, or nature. Kits will include everything you need to recreate the colorful look of an amate painting while learning about their place in Mexico’s history.  Available starting Monday, September 12 at the library while supplies last.
